Sarawak Free Education Initiative Reflects Government’s Commitment

TATAU – The Sarawak government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that its citizens are not left behind in the state’s development through welfare initiatives, including free education at state-owned universities and special financial assistance for students in higher learning institutions.

Senator Rita Sarimah Patrick Insol highlighted that the RM600 million programme allows Sarawakian students to study at four state-owned universities without tuition fees. In addition, each student will receive financial aid totaling RM1,200 for their studies at other higher learning institutions.

“This initiative aligns with Sarawak Maju Makmur 2030, aimed at producing more skilled workers to strengthen the state’s economy,” she said while officiating the 11th stopover of the 2025 Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) Convoy at Luvak Anak Joo Longhouse, Sungai Jelai, Tatau on Friday.

She also encouraged the Tatau community to participate in the “1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang” Campaign to commemorate National Month, emphasising that displaying the national flag represents both patriotism and the harmony of Sarawak’s multi-ethnic population.

KMJG 2025 Convoy Head, Roszilawati Nor Aziz, said the convoy began on 2 August, covering 1,810 kilometers across 22 main locations from Lundu to Lawas. Each stopover features activities designed to foster patriotism, community engagement, and entertainment.

During the ceremony, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tatau was recognised as the Runner-up in the National Storytelling Competition (Kelab Malaysiaku 2025) at the Sarawak level.
