SIMUNJAN — A family in Kampung Sageng Hilir lost their home and belongings in a fire on Tuesday afternoon, prompting immediate assistance from local leaders and emergency services.
The blaze, which began around 2.20 pm, razed the home of Jemat Engge, 63, leaving him and his family displaced. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Fire and rescue officials said an emergency call was received at 2.36 pm, with firefighters arriving at the scene within four minutes.
Despite challenges caused by low water pressure, the fire was brought under control in 10 minutes and fully extinguished soon after. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause and total losses.
Simunjan State Assemblyman (ADUN) Awla Dris rushed back from Kuching upon hearing of the incident to personally visit the affected family. During his visit, he conveyed his sympathies and provided an initial cash donation to help ease their burden.
“I am deeply sympathetic to the plight of the family. We will work closely with relevant agencies to channel emergency assistance and explore ways to help them rebuild their lives,” he said.
Awla added that immediate focus would be on ensuring the victims have temporary shelter and access to essentials such as food and clothing.
He also appealed to the public to contribute aid, especially in the form of daily necessities, while awaiting further official support.
The Simunjan Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Nazari Harun, confirmed his team’s quick response despite initial obstacles and reiterated that investigations are still underway.
This incident highlights the importance of community solidarity and swift coordination between state representatives, government agencies, and local residents in responding to disasters.
