Sarikei MRP Grants Disbursed to Local Groups for Community Development

SARIKEI – A recent cheque presentation under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) saw a wave of support extended to local organisations across Sarikei, emphasising community impact over institutional growth.

Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, who serves as both Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and Member of Parliament for Sarikei while also representing Repok in the State Assembly, highlighted that the grants are intended to benefit local residents directly rather than merely supporting associations.

During the event at the Repok constituency service centre, 50 community groups and NGOs within Repok received financial assistance, including Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs), cultural associations, and sports clubs.

Huang framed the initiative as part of the state government’s broader push through the GPS-led administration to ensure inclusive development, particularly in rural communities.

Reflecting the scale and continuity of the effort, previous coverage noted that 73 associations within the Sarikei parliamentary area were collectively awarded RM285,000 under the MRP scheme. This grant also aimed to stimulate local programmes with tangible community benefits.

Huang further encouraged recipients to utilise the allocations effectively, noting that such support “serves as a platform to foster unity and improve the welfare of the people.”

Beyond the MRP, additional infrastructure efforts are underway. Sarikei has also been a beneficiary of allocations under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), with RM1.5 million approved for 50 projects, including road construction, cemetery maintenance, and upgrades to places of worship.

These initiatives complement investments such as road upkeep funding and irrigation-related grants aimed at flood mitigation.

Taken together, these funding streams MRP allocations and broader RTP and infrastructure investments underscore an ongoing governmental strategy to elevate community welfare and rural resilience in Sarikei.
