Sarawak Allocates Funds for Logging Road Upgrades Statewide

BELAGA – The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure by upgrading logging roads across Sarawak.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated that improving these routes is essential for the well-being of rural communities and will allow for more systematic maintenance through federal funding mechanisms.

Speaking at a community leader gathering at the Belaga Community Hall on Tuesday, Uggah, who is also Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, highlighted that of the 5,297 kilometres of logging roads in the state, approximately 3,293 kilometers remain in active use.

Once upgraded and reclassified as state roads, these pathways become eligible for inclusion in the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS), ensuring regular allocation of maintenance funds.

The state cabinet has approved an allocation of RM38 million for repairs to roads affected by heavy rainfall and landslides, including sections such as Jalan Menjawah-Belaga and areas around Lusong Laku.

Uggah also acknowledged the efforts of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg in prioritizing rural development through agencies like the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA).

The event included the presentation of appointment certificates to three new village chiefs, 23 extension certificates, and one appreciation award.
