Sarawak Premier and Family Experience First Ride on E-Penambang

KUCHING – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, together with his family, experienced a ride on the E-Penambang, the state’s first electric ferry operating along the Sarawak River.

The introduction of the E-Penambang marks a new chapter in Kuching’s river transport system, enhancing the city’s iconic penambang service with modern, safe, and environmentally friendly technology while preserving the traditional design of the wooden ferry that has long been part of Kuching’s heritage.

During the visit, the Premier was briefed by representatives from the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) on the operational details of the service. Currently, there are nine units of electric ferries supported by ten charging stations located at the Kampung Sungai Bintangor Pontoon Jetty.

The E-Penambang initiative is part of Sarawak’s wider effort to strengthen its Smart City development strategy, particularly under the Smart City Mobility component. It supports the state’s move towards low-carbon urban solutions, aligning with Sarawak’s long-term goals in sustainable development and environmental preservation.

YAB Premier Abang Johari stressed that the transformation of the traditional penambang into an electric-powered ferry demonstrates Sarawak’s commitment to modernisation while protecting cultural heritage. He said the initiative not only improves transport efficiency but also plays a role in reducing the city’s carbon footprint.

Among those present were Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy and Petros), Datuk Haji Ibrahim bin Haji Baki, Datuk Mayor of Kuching North, Dato Haji Hilmy bin Haji Othman, DBKU Director, Encik Ramzi bin Abdillah, DBKU Deputy Director of Infrastructure Services, Ts. Mohamad Faisal bin Adenan, and senior officers from SEB.

The launch of the E-Penambang service reflects Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to embrace clean energy innovations, setting an example for sustainable urban mobility in Malaysia.
