LIMBANG – Close collaboration between the federal and state governments is essential for driving development in Sarawak, according to State Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
He emphasized that such cooperation not only benefits local progress but also contributes to broader regional growth within ASEAN.
The Premier made these remarks during the launch ceremony of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 2 project, officiated by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday.
The SSLR Phase 2 project, valued at RM7.15 billion, will span 335 kilometers and connect key routes across northern Sarawak, including Mulu to Long Seridan, Long Seridan to Nanga Medamit, Long Luping to Long Komap in Ba’Kelalan, and Rumah Aling to Long Luping.
Scheduled for completion by June 2029, the infrastructure initiative is designed to enhance connectivity between Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei Darussalam, facilitating economic and social integration within Borneo.
Premier Abang Zohari highlighted the project’s strategic importance, noting that it aligns with Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.
“This road will connect Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei Darussalam, strengthening our contribution to ASEAN’s development,” he stated.
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, and other dignitaries.
The Premier also underscored the need for improved utilities in northern Sarawak, including water and electricity supply, to complement the road infrastructure.
He affirmed that the state government has allocated resources for these utilities, which will support economic activities in agriculture and tourism.
“With good roads, our economic sectors will be strengthened. This is the result of close cooperation between the two governments,” he added.
