BINTULU – The Immigration Enforcement Unit in Bintulu carried out a special operation known as Ops Sapu to address the ongoing issue of illegal immigrants in the town. The operation, which was conducted in several areas around Bintulu, involved a total of 34 enforcement officers.
During the integrated operation, 80 individuals were screened at multiple locations. Following the inspection, 63 individuals were detained, comprising 42 men and 21 women. They were arrested on suspicion of committing various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63, including overstaying and not possessing valid travel documents.
According to the Immigration Department, Ops Sapu was aimed at curbing the increasing number of illegal immigrants who continue to reside and work in the country without proper permits. Authorities stressed that strict enforcement will remain a priority to ensure national security and sovereignty are protected.
“All detainees will undergo further investigation before legal action is taken. We will not compromise when it comes to protecting the country’s laws and security,” said an Immigration spokesperson.
The department also reminded members of the public, especially employers, not to shelter or employ foreign workers who lack valid work permits or travel documents. Employers found guilty of hiring illegal workers may also face stern action, including fines and imprisonment.
Immigration officers assured that enforcement operations like Ops Sapu will continue from time to time in Bintulu and other areas across Sarawak. The cooperation of the public is considered vital in addressing the issue of illegal immigrants that continues to burden the nation’s resources and security.
