Sarawak Anchors Future Growth in Sustainability

KUCHING – Sustainability remains the cornerstone of Sarawak’s long-term growth strategy, according to the state’s leadership.

At the 2025 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award Grand Ceremony held in Kuching, this commitment was underscored as both a moral imperative and an economic roadmap.

The message, delivered on behalf of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari, by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, highlighted that Sarawak’s progress is intentionally aligned with environmental stewardship and social equity.

The Premier’s statement emphasized that since 2017, the JCI award platform has spotlighted individuals and organizations translating global sustainability goals into tangible local action.

“Sustainability is not a buzzword here, it is the framework guiding our policies,” the Premier’s speech noted.

He referenced Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategy 2030, which targets a resilient, equitable, and ecologically balanced future for all residents.

Dr. Sim, addressing the 500-strong audience at Boulevard Imperial Hotel, commended JCI Malaysia for nurturing socially conscious youth leaders.

With a touch of humour, he remarked, “Ten years ago, people looked down on Sarawak. Now they look up, and that responsibility weighs heavy.”

The event, themed “Local Action, Global Impact,” celebrated over 200 projects advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Winners gain not only recognition, but also access to networks and partnerships to scale their initiatives.
