SIMUNJAN – The newly completed Simunjan Town Hawker Centre, built at a cost of RM458,215, is set to become a vibrant hub for local economic activity and community interaction.
The centre, which houses 26 tables with capacity for 38 traders, was officially launched on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by Batang Sadong Member of Parliament, Rodiyah Sapiee, and Simunjan State Assemblyman (ADUN) Awla Dris.
Rodiyah emphasised the importance of the facility as more than just a place for transactions, but as the “lifeblood of Simunjan’s economy.”
“This market is not just a location to trade vegetables, fruits and dried foods, but the hawkers here are our heroes who work hard every day to earn a living while ensuring residents have access to fresh and sufficient supplies,” she said.
She also expressed hope that the modern, cleaner, and safer facilities will attract more customers, raise business opportunities, and help traders improve their household income. Rodiyah further proposed additional awnings in the future to enhance comfort for hawkers and visitors.
Meanwhile, ADUN Awla Dris highlighted the project as an example of strong cooperation between Federal and State Governments under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) framework, ensuring the welfare of the people remains a priority.
“This market is proof that the government is committed to providing the best facilities, especially for rural communities. I call on hawkers to maintain cleanliness, discipline, and make full use of this new facility for the common good,” he said.
The project commenced on 11 December 2023 and reached full completion on 9 December 2024, within its 12-month contract period.
With its completion, the Simunjan Town Hawker Centre is poised to become a new landmark in strengthening the local economy and uplifting the lives of traders and residents alike.
