SARIKEI – The Sarikei branch of the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) successfully detained 10 illegal immigrants (PATI) during an enforcement operation, Ops Sapu, carried out in the early hours of this morning.
The operation, which began at 2.05am and ended at 3.06am, involved 12 officers from the Enforcement Unit. According to JIM, the team raided two separate locations — a goods storage store near the Bayong Water Treatment Plant and an unnumbered wooden house located along Jalan Sarikei Bypass.
A total of 13 individuals were inspected during the raids. From this number, 10 were confirmed to be illegal immigrants, consisting of nine men and one woman, all Indonesian citizens. They were unable to present valid travel documents when requested by the enforcement officers.
All of the suspects were found to have violated provisions under the Immigration Act 1959/63. A formal police report was lodged at the Sarikei Police Station to record the case. The 10 detainees are expected to be processed for further legal action, including deportation.
JIM Sarikei emphasised that such enforcement exercises are part of continuous efforts to ensure that Sarawak remains free from illegal entry and activities that could disrupt public order and security. The department also reminded employers and the public not to provide shelter or employment to foreigners without proper permits, as this is also an offence under existing laws.
The immigration authorities added that strict action will continue to be taken against those who flout the law. Ops Sapu will be conducted from time to time in different areas within Sarikei to curb the presence of illegal immigrants in the division.
The department also urged the public to provide information if they suspect the presence of undocumented migrants in their neighbourhoods. Such cooperation, JIM stated, is vital in supporting enforcement efforts and protecting the welfare of the community. — Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia Sarawak
