Batu Niah Police Arrest Five Suspects, Seize Stolen Motorcycles in Op Lejang

MIRI – Police in Batu Niah have arrested five suspects and seized several case items, including stolen motorcycles and a weapon, following a series of raids under Op Lejang.

The operation, carried out at around 4.30pm by the Task Force Team from the Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Prevention Branch of Batu Niah Police Station under Miri IPD, led to the arrest of three local men aged between 24 and 35.

Interrogations with the three suspects later resulted in the arrest of two more men – one local and one foreigner – at separate locations.

During the follow-up operation, police successfully seized seven motorcycles of various types, all suspected to have been stolen. Officers also discovered a pellet gun barrel, pellets and liquid, believed to be used as part of a weapon, from a hut belonging to one of the suspects.

Active Motorcycle Theft Group Dismantled

Initial investigations revealed that the group had been actively involved in motorcycle thefts across Miri and Batu Niah. Their main targets were motorcycles without additional security features such as double locks, which made them easier to steal.

The stolen motorcycles were then sold to buyers at cheaper prices. Police believe that with the arrests, several unsolved cases of motorcycle theft in the area have now been successfully resolved.

Case Investigation and Legal Action

The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for motorcycle theft, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and a possible fine.

In addition, the possession of the pellet gun is being investigated under Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for up to seven years in jail, a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both if convicted.

Police Reminder to the Public

Police have urged the public to take extra precautions to prevent motorcycle thefts by:

  • Using an additional key lock or alarm system.
  • Parking in safe, well-lit areas equipped with CCTV.
  • Reporting suspicious activities immediately to the authorities.

The Royal Malaysian Police reaffirmed their commitment to fighting criminal activities, particularly motorcycle theft, and stressed the importance of community cooperation in providing information to assist investigations.
