SERIAN – Residents of villages across the Semaran zone have been given bottled water after a burst main pipe disrupted their clean water supply, local officials said.
The Muara Tuang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Service Centre, working alongside the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), organised the distribution of drinking water to affected communities while repairs continue.
The interruption followed damage to a main pipeline during field works carried out by a KUTS contractor, an incident that has prompted public statements from water authorities and calls for greater care during excavation work.
Among the villages that received immediate assistance were Kampung Soh, Kampung Raeh, Kampung Seruit, Kampung Sungai Turung, Kampung Betong Kanowit, Kampung Bedega, Kampung Merang Lama, Kampung Merang Baru, Kampung Bintawa and Kampung Segenam. Volunteers and organisers ensured deliveries reached households in an orderly manner.
Dato Idris Buang, Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly and the Muara Tuang ADUN, said he was monitoring the relief effort to make certain residents’ basic needs were met and thanked those involved for their swift response.
The First Response Team (FReT) from the Muara Tuang assemblyman’s operations headquarters assisted with logistics and door-to-door delivery, helping to speed distribution and reduce disruption to daily life.
Authorities and utility bodies have said repair works are under way and urged the public to follow official notices as restoration progresses.
Broader concerns about repeated utility damage during KUTS-related works have been raised by the water board and local representatives, who are pressing for improved safeguards to prevent similar incidents.
