KPJ Kuching Hospital Launches Oncology Daycare to Boost Cancer Care in Sarawak

KUCHING: The Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Dato Wee Hong Seng, today officiated the Open Day of KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital and the launch of its new Oncology Daycare Unit, on behalf of the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The event marked a significant milestone for both the hospital and Sarawak’s growing healthcare sector, especially in improving access to cancer treatment and support services.

In his officiating speech, Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted that the launch of the Oncology Daycare Services symbolises the state’s progress in making specialised cancer care more accessible to Sarawakians.

“Cancer remains one of the biggest health challenges in our society. Here in Sarawak, we are witnessing a steady rise in cancer cases. This requires not only advanced facilities but also teamwork between the public and private sectors to ensure timely treatment and long-term support,” he said.

He congratulated Team KPJ Kuching for their dedication and commitment to enhancing healthcare services through innovative and patient-focused initiatives. “This Oncology Daycare Unit represents more than just a new facility — it is a lifeline for patients and families who can now receive treatment close to home,” he added.

Dato Wee emphasised that access to compassionate, high-quality medical care should be a shared responsibility. “When private institutions like KPJ complement the public healthcare system, the whole community benefits. Together, we can make Sarawak’s healthcare stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient,” he said.

He also noted that the collaboration between the government, private healthcare providers, and the community is vital for achieving Sarawak’s healthcare vision. “This partnership is the way forward — building a healthcare system that responds effectively to the needs of our people,” he concluded.

The launch event was attended by KPJ Kuching management, medical professionals, community leaders, and members of the public, who later toured the hospital’s facilities and took part in the Open Day activities.
