KUCHING – The recently concluded Astronomy Tour 2025 has successfully created dynamic new learning environments, fostering greater interest in space science among Sarawak’s youth.
The programme was hailed as a strategic initiative to popularise science and reinforce STEM education throughout the state.
Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation & Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, highlighted the event’s unique methodology.
He noted that its creative and inclusive format offered a novel experience for Sarawak, where visitors engaged with astronomy through a relaxed, picnic-style setting.
“This is the first programme in Sarawak where visitors can learn about the sun, planets and celestial objects in a fun and interactive way,” he stated during the closing ceremony at the Serian Conference Centre (SCC).
He emphasised that activities like the Mini Planetarium, Planetary Virtual Reality (VR), and DIY Rocket workshops were crucial for stimulating curiosity and building a solid foundation in STEM fields.
The programme, which ran from 9th October at CENTEXS Lundu to 13th October at the SCC, attracted approximately 1,000 visitors.
Participation included students from more than 15 schools across Sarawak, demonstrating significant public and student interest in astronomy and space science.
Dato Sri Roland Sagah added that the overwhelming response aligns with the goals of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to cultivate a knowledge-based and innovative society.
The event was also attended by the Director of the National Planetarium, Mohd Zamri Shah Mastor, alongside other local officials.
