SELANGAU – Police have arrested a 47-year-old foreign labourer suspected of possessing methamphetamine during a raid at the Selangau flyover area yesterday afternoon.
Mukah District Police Chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the suspect was detained around 2.15pm by officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Mukah District Police Headquarters (IPD) following intelligence and public tip-offs.
“When police approached, the suspect became aggressive and attempted to flee. However, he was successfully subdued using minimal force,” DSP Muhamad Rizal said in a statement today.
Upon inspection, officers found 11 transparent straw tubes hidden in the suspect’s trouser pocket, each believed to contain crystal methamphetamine weighing 6.18 grams, estimated to be worth RM680.
The suspect was taken to the Mukah IPD for questioning. A urine test later confirmed he was negative for drug consumption, but initial investigations revealed that he was allegedly selling the drugs between RM50 and RM100 per straw.
DSP Muhamad Rizal said the case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail term of two to five years and three to nine strokes of the cane upon conviction.
The suspect has been remanded for four days until October 22 to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, DSP Muhamad Rizal assured that the Mukah police will continue their efforts to combat drug-related crimes, especially in the Mukah and Selangau districts.
“We will not compromise with anyone involved in drug activities. The public is encouraged to cooperate by sharing any information about drug abuse or trafficking,” he said, urging the public to contact the Mukah IPD hotline at 084-871222 or the nearest police station.
