Sarikei Council Enforces Advertisement Licensing Rules

SARIKEI – The Sarikei District Council (MDS) has issued a firm reminder to all businesses and advertisers regarding the mandatory licensing of public advertisements.

The council stressed that adherence to these rules is vital for upholding the town’s safety, order, and visual appeal.

During a press conference at the MDS Meeting Room, the council elaborated that advertisements contribute significantly to the town’s character.

Unlicensed signage, however, has become a growing issue, leading to visual clutter and potential safety hazards.

The regulatory basis for this enforcement is the Local Authorities (Advertisement) By Laws 2012. This legislation requires all advertisements to be approved before they are displayed.

Operating without a licence is an offence that can lead to penalties, including fines and the removal of non-compliant materials.

MDS emphasised that the licensing system is not merely bureaucratic. It serves as a crucial measure to protect the community by ensuring public safety and promoting a well-maintained urban environment. The council encourages businesses to be proactive in securing the correct permits.

Application submissions are processed at the Enforcement Division counter, where council officers are available to assist.

The council also warned that continued non-compliance will result in firm enforcement action. This initiative is part of a broader collaborative effort to maintain Sarikei as a safe, organised, and attractive town for everyone.
