Miri Pioneers Child-Friendly City Initiative

MIRI – The city of Miri has reinforced its status as a pioneer in developing child-friendly urban environments with the recent inauguration of its City Child Council.

The ceremony, which saw 23 young members officially appointed, was conducted at Miri City Hall and underscores a broader state-level commitment to youth inclusion.

Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, presided over the event.

He emphasised that the initiative provides a vital platform for the younger generation to cultivate leadership abilities and engage in civic discourse.

He stated that the council allows children to “contribute their views on policies and decisions that affect the daily lives of the community.”

This establishment positions Miri within a significant state-wide movement. Sarawak is now a national leader in this area, having successfully launched eight local child councils, a figure that surpasses efforts in other Malaysian states.

The strategy is integral to building a more inclusive society where young people’s perspectives are valued in shaping their living environments.

Beyond fostering leadership, the council will address pressing contemporary issues affecting youth. Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim highlighted the critical need to educate children on civic awareness and personal safety.

He specifically pointed to the growing concerns around cyberbullying and mental health, urging a collective effort from all community stakeholders.

The Deputy Premier reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring no child is excluded from educational and welfare opportunities. This child-centric approach aligns with larger developmental ambitions for the region.

In his address, he also shared aspirational plans to bolster Sarawak’s education and health sectors, including proposals for an international university and a medical research institute in Miri to cultivate local expertise.

The event was attended by several prominent figures, demonstrating cross-departmental support. Among them were Miri City Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohammad, and senior officials from the ministries of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, as well as Women, Children, and Community Wellbeing.

Their presence signified a unified governmental approach to nurturing the potential of Sarawak’s future generations.
