Man Killed in Hit-and-Run on Pan Borneo Highway Near Miri

MIRI — A man believed to be in his 40s to 50s was killed in a tragic hit-and-run accident along the Pan Borneo Highway near Miri on Sunday evening.

Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, confirmed that the accident occurred at Kilometre 826.9 of the Miri-Bintulu route. The District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD) received a call about the incident around 4.40 pm.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, who was walking along the roadside, was struck from behind by an unidentified vehicle. The impact caused fatal injuries, and medical officers from the Ladang Tiga Health Clinic confirmed the victim’s death at about 4.05 pm,” Mohd Farhan said in a statement today.

He added that the victim has yet to be identified. Based on witness accounts, the man was last seen on October 16 in the Kampung Subis 1 area, approximately five kilometres from the accident site.

“The man was seen walking shirtless and wearing only a pair of shorts. He was of stocky build and had no visible tattoos,” he said.

Police are currently investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the accident or has information about the vehicle involved to assist in the investigation.

“The public is encouraged to contact Traffic Investigating Officer, Inspector Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan, at 018-9529957 / 085-433400, or report to the nearest police station,” Mohd Farhan added.

The Pan Borneo Highway, which connects Sarawak’s major towns, has seen an increase in traffic flow and accident cases in recent months, prompting calls for better safety measures and awareness among motorists and pedestrians.
