Sarawak Youth Voices Shape State Policy Direction

KUALA LUMPUR – The perspectives and ambitions of young Sarawakians are increasingly influencing the formation of regional government policies. This initiative reflects a committed effort by the state government to place the viewpoints of the younger generation at the heart of its future planning.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof has emphasised that the Sarawak Government actively encourages children from the state, particularly those residing in Peninsular Malaysia, to share their hopes and propose fresh concepts concerning social and economic strategies.

He explained that these contributions are frequently gathered through organised forums, such as the Sarawak Agenda Townhall sessions featuring the Premier of Sarawak.

“These gatherings provide a direct channel for students and other Sarawakians, whether they are building their careers or families in Peninsular Malaysia, to engage with their state leader,” Datuk Amar Fadillah stated. He further revealed that the outcomes of these dialogues often serve as a foundational element for the Premier when devising new governmental approaches.

The Deputy Prime Minister made these comments during a final inspection of preparations for the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak (LBAS) 2025 event at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). In his capacity as the Advisor to the event’s main committee, he provided examples of past suggestions that have been successfully translated into action.

He highlighted the Sarawak Graduate Return Initiative (IGPS), which offers a RM600 travel subsidy for students returning from the peninsula, as a direct result of such engagement. Another policy born from these consultations is the provision of RM1,200 in pocket money to assist students with living costs.

Datuk Amar Fadillah expressed his hope that the upcoming townhall session would yield further constructive ideas and critiques. This feedback is seen as vital for the government to refine its services and ensure that the needs of all Sarawakians are met through inclusive participation.

The review session was attended by several senior figures, including Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Deputy Minister of Economy Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib. Also, present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and a number of Members of Parliament from Sarawak.

This policy of actively soliciting input from the diaspora is part of a broader strategy to maintain strong connections with Sarawakians nationwide. It acknowledges the unique insights of those who experience life in other parts of the country, aiming to harness those perspectives for the state’s benefit.

The approach demonstrates a modern governance model that values bottom-up feedback in the policy making process, ensuring development directions remain relevant to the citizens they are designed to serve.
