The fire, believed to have started due to a short circuit, engulfed the Sacofa-owned tower at approximately 10.39pm. Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames rapidly spreading across the structure before the fire department arrived.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre (PGO) stated that personnel from the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were immediately dispatched upon receiving the emergency call.

“Upon arrival, we found that the fire involved a telecommunications tower and not an electric pole as initially reported. Approximately 60 percent of the tower was already burned,” he said in a statement.

The firefighting team used a 200-foot hose stream with a nozzle, drawing water from a nearby fire hydrant to control the blaze. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire without any reported injuries or casualties.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident, while the public has been advised to stay clear of the area until the structure is deemed safe. Sacofa representatives have also confirmed that telecommunications services in the area may be temporarily affected due to the damage.

Residents in the surrounding area expressed relief that no one was harmed but voiced concern over the potential disruption of communication services. “It was shocking to see the tower on fire, but thankfully everyone is safe. We hope the services will return soon,” said a nearby resident.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks for electrical and telecommunication infrastructure. Authorities urged building and facility managers to remain vigilant to prevent similar occurrences.
