SHANGHAI – Sarawak has articulated its strategic vision for a technologically advanced aviation sector at a major international gathering. The state’s plans were presented at the International Civil Aviation Forum 2025, an event focused on reinforcing worldwide air links and adopting innovation.
The theme for this year’s forum, held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was “Strengthening Global Connectivity and Embracing Innovation in Aviation.” The event assembled more than 300 delegates from numerous countries and regions, establishing a significant platform for global dialogue.
Representing Sarawak, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, the state’s Minister of Transport, delivered a keynote address. He emphasised that Sarawak is currently at a pivotal juncture, transitioning its aviation framework from a regional focus to an international one.
He articulated the state’s ambition, stating, “Through innovation and collaboration, we aim to connect Sarawak to the global aviation network and create more high-value job opportunities for our people.” This objective forms a core part of the state’s broader economic development strategy.
The forum featured other prominent speakers from leading global bodies, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Academics from prestigious universities and senior figures from international aviation companies also contributed to the discussions.
Key topics examined during the event included the future trajectory of the global aviation industry. Particular emphasis was placed on smart transformation, the application of artificial intelligence, the integration of green energy, and standardising infrastructure.
Minister Lee further underscored Sarawak’s commitment to fostering international partnerships. He confirmed the state is actively seeking closer collaboration with global aviation authorities, research institutions, and industry leaders to explore the future of sustainable and intelligent air mobility.
In addition to the main plenary sessions, the forum hosted two thematic sub-forums. These smaller sessions delved into specialised areas such as breakthroughs in aviation technology, intelligent management systems, and global best practices for sustainable development.
The participation of a diverse range of international experts solidified the forum’s reputation as a crucial venue for strengthening worldwide cooperation. It serves as a catalyst for innovation within the rapidly evolving aviation sector.
For Sarawak, this international exposure is a key step in attracting the expertise and investment necessary to modernise its air transport infrastructure. A smarter, more connected aviation network is seen as vital for driving future economic growth and elevating the state’s global profile.
