BAU – Three churches in Bau have received a combined RM750,000 in financial assistance under Phase 2 of the 2025 allocation from the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR). The presentation was made by Opar State Assemblyman Billy Sujang, who emphasised the state government’s ongoing commitment to supporting religious institutions and community development.
The recipients were St. Joseph Church, Kampung Opar (RM300,000), St. Benedict Church, Kampung Tembawang Sauh (RM200,000), and St. Teresa Avila Church, Kampung Stenggang (RM250,000).
Billy Sujang noted that this was the second time St. Joseph Church had received UNIFOR assistance, reflecting the government’s sustained support for the local community’s efforts to improve worship facilities.
He added that the church project had also secured an additional RM1.5 million allocation from the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) to ensure its completion.
For St. Benedict Church, the RM200,000 allocation will be used to construct the front building structure and install interior tiling. However, the church has indicated that it requires a further RM300,000 to complete the entire project.
Meanwhile, St. Teresa Avila Church will utilise its RM250,000 grant to upgrade the church hall. Planned works include the installation of gliding, awnings, a stage, and electrical wiring, subject to available funds.
The allocations form part of the Sarawak Government’s broader initiative to provide inclusive support for non-Islamic religious institutions through UNIFOR.
The programme, which has disbursed millions of ringgit across the state, aims to ensure that all communities benefit from improved facilities and infrastructure.
Earlier in October, the state government announced that RM35.77 million had been distributed under Phase 2 of UNIFOR’s 2025 grants, covering 107 projects across Sarawak.
This funding is part of a larger RM90 million allocation for the year, underscoring the administration’s commitment to balanced development for all religious groups.
Billy Sujang said the assistance reflects the government’s recognition of the role churches and other religious institutions play in fostering unity, social cohesion, and community well-being.
He reiterated his responsibility as a representative to ensure that government initiatives reach the grassroots effectively.
The presentation of cheques in Bau highlights the state’s inclusive development agenda, ensuring that rural communities are not left behind in efforts to improve facilities for worship, education, and social activities.
