Sarawak Governor Hosts Dinner Honouring Veteran Media Figures

KUCHING – His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, hosted a casual dinner on Tuesday evening to honour four veteran media figures who have made significant contributions to journalism in Malaysia.

The dinner, held at the Governor’s official residence at Kasuma Resort, Kuching, was attended by Dato’ Sri Azman Ujang, former Chief Executive Officer of BERNAMA; M. Rajah, veteran journalist, writer and columnist; Churchill Edward, Chief Reporter of The Borneo Post; and Hamdan Ismail, BERNAMA Sarawak Bureau Chief.

The gathering served as a platform to strengthen ties between Sarawak’s leadership and senior media practitioners, while also recognising their decades of service in delivering accurate, ethical, and balanced reporting.

During the evening, discussions touched on a wide range of current issues at both state and national levels. Topics included Sarawak’s development agenda, the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern society, Native Customary Rights (NCR) land matters, current political developments, and the establishment of the Faculty of Law at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

In his remarks, Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi expressed deep appreciation for the contributions of veteran journalists, acknowledging their role as a voice for the community and their commitment to upholding journalistic integrity.

He highlighted the importance of their work in shaping public understanding and advancing the state’s information landscape.

“Veteran journalists have played a vital role in ensuring that information reaches the people in an accurate and ethical manner. Their dedication has been invaluable to the progress of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole,” he said.

The Governor also commended the continued commitment of media practitioners in reporting news responsibly, noting that their insights and experience remain crucial in an era of rapid technological and social change.

The evening concluded with a commemorative photo session and a relaxed banquet, creating an atmosphere of warmth and appreciation for the services of the veteran media figures.

The event not only celebrated their achievements but also provided a meaningful space for knowledge-sharing and reflection on the evolving role of journalism in society.
