SPANS Enhances Local Governance with Sarikei Visit

SARIKEI- Collaborative efforts to enhance local governance and public service efficiency have been strengthened following a working visit by the Sarawak State Public Service Commission (SPANS) to the Sarikei District Council (MDS). The engagement aimed to reinforce support mechanisms for local authorities and improve their service delivery to the community.

The delegation was led by SPANS Chairman, Datu Kameri Affandi, who was accompanied by Commission Members and senior management staff. The meeting, held at the Sarawak Government Administration Centre for the Sarikei Division, served as a strategic platform for direct dialogue between the state commission and local council officials.

During the session, Datu Kameri emphasised that SPANS is committed to providing robust support and guidance to civil servants at every level. He clarified that the commission’s role extends beyond mere evaluation to actively assisting government departments and agencies in enhancing their operational effectiveness.

“SPANS not only evaluates, but also helps government departments and agencies including district councils improve efficiency and integrity in serving the people,” he stated.

The programme facilitated a constructive exchange of views and practical suggestions for systemic improvement. Key discussions centred on identifying measures to refine the public service delivery system, making it more streamlined and responsive to the specific needs of the local population in Sarikei. This focus on localised solutions is considered vital for addressing community-specific challenges.

The occasion was also marked by a ceremonial exchange of souvenirs between the visiting delegation and the host council. This gesture was symbolic of the mutual appreciation and enduring partnership between the two entities, underscoring a shared commitment to administrative excellence.

SPANS functions as the central body responsible for the management and development of the public service in Sarawak. Its mandate includes overseeing the integrity, professionalism, and overall performance of the state’s civil service, ensuring it meets the highest standards of public administration.

For local councils like the MDS, such direct engagement with the state commission provides valuable insights and access to broader state-level resources and initiatives. It allows for the alignment of local operations with the strategic objectives of the Sarawak government, fostering a cohesive approach to public administration.

Continuous improvement in governance is a cornerstone of the state government’s policy. Initiatives that promote efficiency, accountability, and transparency within local authorities are directly linked to improved socio-economic outcomes and greater public trust in governmental institutions.
