KV Miri Signs MoU to Boost TVET Industry Collaboration

MIRI – A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Kolej Vokasional (KV) Miri and three industry partners has reinforced strategic collaboration aimed at strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Sarawak.

The agreement, formalised in 2025, involves Borneo Inspire Training & Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Qasturie Offshore Engineering Sdn Bhd, and Extreme Engineering.

The partnership is expected to create stronger linkages between education and industry, ensuring graduates are better prepared for the demands of the job market.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, described the MoU as a significant step forward in enhancing the employability of TVET graduates. His remarks were delivered on his behalf by Kelvin Chia Kah Leong, Secretary of SUPP Piasau.

“This initiative opens opportunities for industrial training, innovation projects, joint research and expertise sharing, which will further strengthen the linkage between education and industry,” Datuk Sebastian said.

He emphasised that the success of TVET education should not be measured solely by academic achievement.

Instead, it must also encompass character development, technical proficiency, and exposure to real-world industrial environments.

“Close cooperation between educational institutions and industry players is crucial to producing a workforce that is competent, innovative and ready to meet the demands of today’s job market,” he added.

The MoU is expected to pave the way for collaborative projects, including industrial placements for students, joint innovation initiatives, and knowledge-sharing platforms.

These efforts aim to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practice, ensuring graduates are equipped with both technical skills and professional attributes.

Industry representatives welcomed the partnership, noting that it would provide companies with access to a pool of skilled graduates while offering students valuable exposure to current industry standards and practices.

The collaboration reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to strengthening TVET as a key driver of workforce development under the state’s long-term economic agenda.

By aligning education with industry needs, KV Miri and its partners aim to nurture graduates who are not only technically capable but also adaptable to evolving market demands.
