AIFFA 2025 Highlights ASEAN Unity and Sarawak’s Growing Creative Leadership

AIFFA 2025 Highlights ASEAN Unity and Sarawak’s Growing Creative Leadership

KUCHING — The ASEAN International Film Festival & Awards (AIFFA) 2025 once again placed Sarawak on the regional stage as industry leaders, filmmakers and creative talents gathered to celebrate Southeast Asia’s cinematic excellence.

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the festival has evolved into more than a film celebration. He described AIFFA as a vital platform that strengthens regional bonds, encourages creative exchange, and showcases an industry “that entertains millions and drives economies worth trillions.”

Speaking at the AIFFA 2025 Gala Night, the Premier reminded guests that ASEAN’s diverse culture and stories carry huge potential to reach global audiences. He said that Southeast Asian filmmakers should continue telling stories that reflect the region’s identity, values and shared heritage.

This year’s event drew notable international figures, including Hong Kong actor Simon Yam and acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz. Their presence, the Premier said, shows that “cinema knows no borders, only the shared language of art,” emphasising how films continue to unite communities across different backgrounds.

The Premier also reaffirmed Sarawak’s steady investment in its creative ecosystem. He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen training opportunities, talent development and creative infrastructure — including the upcoming Sarawak Centre for Performing Arts — which aims to support future generations of filmmakers, performers and artists.

He recalled that the inspiration for AIFFA originated from a 2012 visit to India during his tenure as Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. That early idea eventually led to ASEAN’s approval for Kuching to host the festival, shaping AIFFA into the major regional event it is today.

AIFFA 2025 recorded a milestone with 200 film submissions, marking its strongest participation to date. New categories introduced this year include awards for ASEAN university short films and Borneo documentary filmmakers, providing fresh avenues to recognise emerging talent.

The Premier also noted that the soon-to-be-launched Sarawak airline, AirBorneo, will boost regional accessibility and support AIFFA’s growth in the coming years.

“Celebrate one another’s achievements, enjoy our hospitality, and remember that every great film begins with a spark,” he told attendees. “Tonight, that spark ignites brightly here in Sarawak.”
