LUNDU – The long-awaited transformation of Tanjong Purun into a major rice cultivation hub has taken a decisive step forward, with 20 landowners receiving compensation totalling RM2.7 million under the first phase of the Tanjong Purun Rice Planting Scheme.
The handover ceremony, held at the Tanjong Datu Service Centre Office, was officiated by Tanjong Datu Assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, who expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Land and Survey Department and other agencies for their role in advancing the project.
He noted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening food security and supporting rural communities.
Phase 1 of the scheme covers 30 lots of land, while subsequent phases are expected to follow. According to Awang Nazri Awang Sap, Kuching Divisional Land and Survey Superintendent, the overall project spans 187 hectares and carries an estimated value of RM50 million. Once completed, it will position Tanjong Purun as one of Sarawak’s key rice-producing areas.
The event was attended by Lundu District Officer Awang Yusup Awang Mostapha, representatives from the Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development (M-FICORD) including Diana Pellipus, and community leaders such as Pemanca Jumahdi Sabian and Penghulu Jamer Katai.
Their presence highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, which involves both government and local stakeholders.
The Tanjong Purun scheme is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to achieve rice self-sufficiency. The state currently produces only about 32% of its rice needs, prompting the government to allocate RM1 billion for paddy infrastructure development across divisions including Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Kapit, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri, and Limbang.
Within this framework, RM50 million has been earmarked specifically for land acquisition in Tanjong Purun, underscoring its importance in the state’s food security agenda.
Recent trials in Lundu have also showcased the potential of hybrid rice varieties, such as the GS30 hybrid, which demonstrated yields of up to 10.5 metric tonnes per hectare despite challenging conditions.
These innovations are expected to complement the infrastructure investments, ensuring higher productivity once the scheme is fully operational.
Community leaders have welcomed the compensation exercise, viewing it as a turning point after years of anticipation. For residents, the upgraded land use promises not only economic opportunities but also improved livelihoods through modernised farming practices.
With Phase 2 and Phase 3 scheduled to follow, the Tanjong Purun Rice Planting Scheme is set to become a cornerstone of Sarawak’s agricultural transformation, linking local aspirations with state-level food security goals.
