KUCHING – Sarawak is advancing towards a lean government model designed to deliver faster, more efficient and cost-effective administration, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
Speaking at the Sarawak Public Service Day 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), the Premier emphasised that the new approach centres on adapting to digital transformation and disciplined budget management.
“Both being able to adapt to digital transformation and being able to manage my budget are the things I remember most. We are moving towards a leaner administration,” he said.
He explained that efficient and sustainable services are crucial to achieving Sarawak’s development agenda, praising the civil service’s ability to embrace digital transformation.
The Premier noted that streamlined processes and modern technology will help ensure that government services remain responsive and aligned with the state’s long-term goals.
Collaboration between state and federal agencies was also highlighted as a key factor in delivering effective governance.
He pointed to joint efforts in addressing dilapidated schools and strengthening healthcare facilities, stressing that such cooperation ensures smoother implementation of projects in line with Sarawak’s development policy.
On the issue of salary alignment between state and federal government employees, Abang Johari described it as subjective, noting that efficiency and performance are more important than uniform pay scales.
“The salary standard is very subjective. The most important thing is the efficiency of the employees in the government service,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to both state and federal civil servants for their effectiveness in implementing policies, adding that disciplined financial management has strengthened the administration’s capacity to deliver results.
“I would like to thank the service of the Sarawak government and the Federal Government for being effective in implementing government policies,” he remarked.
The Premier concluded by stressing that consistent and responsible allocation of funds has made Sarawak’s administration stronger and more effective.
The lean government initiative is expected to enhance governance, reduce costs, and ensure that services are delivered more quickly and efficiently to the people.
