Sarawak Boosts Welfare Aid for Mothers, Infants and Children in 2026

KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has announced expanded welfare initiatives in the 2026 state budget, with significant allocations aimed at supporting mothers, infants, children, and vulnerable groups.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg revealed that RM20 million will be channelled through the Sarawak Endowment Fund to provide every child with a stable financial foundation at birth.

This measure is intended to strengthen long-term social security and ensure equal opportunities for all Sarawakian children.

In addition, the Maternity Assistance Programme has been allocated RM5 million to ease the financial burden of new mothers. The Premier emphasised that these initiatives reflect the government’s compassion and commitment to family wellbeing.

Speaking during the debate on the Supply (2026) Bill at the Third Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, Abang Johari also highlighted support for children requiring special assistance.

He confirmed that RM3.9 million will be allocated to strengthen the work of the One-Stop Early Intervention Centre (OSEIC) in Kuching, Dalat, and Miri. OSEIC provides early intervention and therapy services for children with developmental delays and special needs.

Beyond maternal and child welfare, the Premier announced that RM55.8 million has been set aside for broader social welfare programmes.

These include assistance for youth, children, persons with disabilities (OKU) unable to work, and victims of natural disasters.

The allocations underscore Sarawak’s holistic approach to welfare, combining financial support, healthcare, and community-based initiatives.

By investing in early childhood development and family assistance, the government aims to reduce long-term social inequalities and strengthen resilience among vulnerable groups.

Observers note that the expanded funding reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of inclusive growth, ensuring that no community is left behind as the state continues to modernise its economy and social infrastructure.
