KUCHING – The reinstatement of direct air services between Kuching and Pontianak has been hailed as a turning point for Sarawak-Indonesia relations, with leaders emphasising its role in strengthening economic, cultural and social ties across Borneo.
The route, operated by AirAsia, resumed on 12 September 2025 after being suspended during the pandemic and following Supadio Airport’s temporary reclassification as a domestic facility.
Its reopening is expected to revitalise cross-border travel and commerce, reconnecting Sarawak with West Kalimantan after several years of disruption.
Speaking at the Indonesia Evening Ceremony, held in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence and the 20th anniversary of the Indonesian Consulate in Kuching.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg described the flight as more than a transport link. He noted that air connectivity serves as a strategic channel for trade, tourism and the exchange of ideas.
“This connectivity will enable the people and industry players from both sides to connect more closely than before, thus stimulating economic growth and strengthening regional relations,” he said in remarks delivered by Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The Premier also highlighted the upcoming launch of Air Borneo in 2026, which will expand direct flight networks to several Indonesian cities.
The new airline, developed as part of Sarawak’s aviation strategy, is expected to enhance tourism, business partnerships and cultural exchange.
Regional developments have added further significance to these initiatives. The relocation of Indonesia’s capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan is seen as a strategic opportunity for Sarawak to deepen cooperation.
Analysts have pointed out that Sarawak’s proximity positions it to benefit from infrastructure projects, trade expansion and collaborative ventures in health and research.
“As a contiguous region, Sarawak is ideally positioned to support the Nusantara vision, including exploring cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, trade, health and research that can provide tangible and lasting benefits to both parties,” the Premier added.
Officials believe these measures will contribute to greater stability and prosperity across Borneo, creating structured frameworks for long-term collaboration.
The ceremony was attended by senior Sarawak officials including Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Datuk Abdullah Saidol, and Datu Hii Chang Kee, alongside foreign representatives such as Dr. Abdullah Zulkifli, Consul General of Indonesia in Kuching, and counterparts from China and Brunei.
The presence of dignitaries underscored the importance of regional partnerships in shaping future growth.
With air links restored and new aviation ventures on the horizon, Sarawak is positioning itself as a key player in regional integration, leveraging its strategic location to foster stronger ties with Indonesia and the wider ASEAN community.
