Sarawak-Indonesia Forge Medical and Renewable Energy Partnership in Borneo

KUCHING – Sarawak and Indonesia are strengthening cooperation in healthcare and renewable energy, with leaders describing the partnership as a new platform to enhance public well-being and drive the green economy across the Borneo region.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said Sarawak is committed to expanding medical infrastructure to meet the growing demand from Indonesian patients who rely on the state’s health services.

He noted that the collaboration extends beyond treatment, encompassing research, innovation and capacity building to deliver long-term benefits for both sides.

“Cooperation in the health sector is not only about patient treatment but also includes research, innovation and capacity building that will provide long-term benefits to both regions,” he said in remarks delivered by Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin during the Indonesia Evening, held to mark the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence and the 20th Anniversary of the Indonesian Consulate in Kuching.

The Premier highlighted the role of medical research centres in Kuching and Miri, which serve as platforms for scientific collaboration, knowledge exchange and the development of new technologies aimed at improving healthcare standards across the region.

In addition to healthcare, the Premier underscored Sarawak’s commitment to renewable energy development.

He pointed to Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) investment in hydroelectric projects in North Kalimantan as evidence of a shared vision for clean energy, economic resilience and sustainable growth.

“This effort will not only strengthen cross-border economic ties but also ensure that communities in both regions have access to clean, stable and environmentally friendly energy sources,” he said.

The partnership reflects Sarawak’s broader ambition to position itself as a hub for sustainable development and innovation in Borneo.

By combining healthcare expansion with renewable energy initiatives, the state aims to foster stronger ties with Indonesia while contributing to regional stability and prosperity.

The event was attended by senior Sarawak officials including Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Datuk Abdullah Saidol, and Datu Hii Chang Kee, alongside international representatives such as Dr. Abdullah Zulkifli, Consul General of Indonesia in Kuching, Xing Weiping, Consul General of China, and Sheikh Abdul Mahdani Dato Paduka Sheikh Abdul Ghani, Consul General of Brunei Darussalam.

Their presence highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in advancing healthcare and sustainable energy.

With these initiatives, Sarawak and Indonesia are laying the groundwork for a stronger, more integrated Borneo region, where medical excellence and renewable energy development serve as cornerstones of future growth.
