Local Fruits Drive and Agro Kenyalang Launch Mark DUN Finale

KUCHING – The closing day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting was enlivened by the launch of the Eat More Local Fruits Campaign and the unveiling of the ninth edition of Agro Kenyalang Magazine. The twin events underscored the state’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and advancing agricultural innovation.

The programme, held at the Sarawak DUN Complex on Wednesday, brought together a wide range of agricultural agencies. Their collective aim was to highlight the nutritional benefits of local fruits while encouraging greater consumption among the public.

The initiative also sought to showcase the economic potential of Sarawak’s agricultural produce, positioning it as a driver of future growth.

The event was attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, accompanied by Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Their presence reflected the government’s strong support for strengthening the agriculture sector and ensuring food security through local production.

Also present was Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD), alongside other distinguished guests. Together, they witnessed the campaign’s efforts to elevate Sarawak’s agricultural profile and encourage entrepreneurship within the sector.

The programme was jointly organised by M-FICORD and the Department of Agriculture Sarawak, with contributions from several agencies including the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak, the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA), the Sarawak Land Development Board (SLDB), the Sarawak Rubber Industry Board (SARIB), the Sago and Nipah Development Board (SNDB), the Sarawak State Farmers’ Organisation (PPNS), and the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM).

The Eat More Local Fruits Campaign emphasised the importance of consuming produce grown within the state. Organisers highlighted that local fruits are not only rich in nutrients but also carry strong market potential, offering opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs to expand their businesses.

Meanwhile, the launch of the ninth edition of Agro Kenyalang Magazine added an informative dimension to the occasion.

The publication featured articles on modern farming technologies, including the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) in agriculture, innovations within the food industry, departmental milestones, and updates on services available to the farming community.

By combining a public health campaign with the promotion of agricultural knowledge, the final day of the DUN Sitting demonstrated Sarawak’s integrated approach to strengthening its agricultural base.

The initiatives reinforced the state’s vision of building a resilient, innovative, and sustainable food sector that benefits both the economy and the community.
