RM1.286 Million Allocated to Belaga Organisations & Churches

BELAGA – More than RM1.2 million in Small Rural Projects (MRP) funding has been channelled to community organisations in Belaga, marking another step in Sarawak’s ongoing rural development efforts.

The symbolic handover ceremony, held at the Belaga Public Works Department Office, saw Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Liwan Lagang present allocations totalling RM1.286 million to 100 recipients. Beneficiaries included Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), local associations, clubs, and Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG).

Liwan highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting grassroots initiatives, noting his appreciation for the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

“This is the concern of our government and a thousand thanks to Sarawak Premier… for his concern in helping the people throughout Sarawak,” he said during the ceremony.

The Belaga constituency has received a total of RM3.15 million in allocations this year, according to Liwan. He reminded recipients of the importance of preparing detailed reports on how the funds are utilised, ensuring transparency and accountability in community projects.

Beyond the MRP disbursement, Liwan also acknowledged the role of the Belaga Action Committee (BAC) and community leaders, whose recent courtesy visit to the Premier during the State Legislative Assembly session resulted in positive outcomes for several development projects.

Among the initiatives receiving government attention are the construction of Belaga Stadium, which has been granted an additional RM5 million, raising its total allocation to RM23.5 million. Other projects include village expansion works, the Lasan Peng Belaga project, a new bridge in Long Busang, and the extension of a water pipeline from Belaga to Long Dungan.

The event also featured contributions from the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), which provided RM498,000 to four churches in Belaga.

The allocations were distributed as follows: RM150,000 to BEM Uma Kahei Church, RM80,000 to BEM Uma Tevok Church, RM88,000 to Rumah Lat Church, and RM180,000 to St. Francis Xavier Church Belaga.

Belaga District Officer Bidah Lujah was also present at the ceremony, underscoring the collaborative effort between government agencies and local communities in driving development.

The funding reflects Sarawak’s broader strategy to strengthen rural infrastructure, empower local organisations, and support religious institutions.

With continued investment, Belaga is set to benefit from improved facilities and enhanced community services, aligning with the state’s vision of balanced development across urban and rural areas.
