Sarawak Strengthens Water Supply Grid to Tackle Rural Shortages

KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has intensified its efforts to ensure universal access to clean water by 2030 through the Sarawak Water Supply Grid Programme, a long-term initiative designed to unify and modernise the state’s water supply system.

The programme, which spans from 2020 to 2040, aims to meet rising demand until 2070. It focuses on stabilising services, improving resilience, and addressing critical areas under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, in a speech delivered by his Deputy Minister Datuk Liwan Lagang at the JBALB Appreciation Ceremony 2024, highlighted the scale of the investment.

He said the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg has allocated RM4 billion for projects involving raw water sources, treatment plants, distribution systems, pipe replacement, and the modernisation of the Sarawak Alternative Rural Water Supply (SAWAS) initiative.

Julaihi stressed that once completed, the projects will provide lasting solutions for rural communities that have long struggled with water shortages. He praised JBALB’s achievements over the past decade, noting its transformation under the leadership of Director Datu Ir. Ts. Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan.

He assured that the ministry will continue to support JBALB in strengthening water services, while emphasising the importance of swift responses to public complaints. In the digital era, he said, misinformation can spread quickly, making accurate communication and cooperation with other agencies essential.

At the same event, Julaihi launched the JBALB Schedule of Rates (SOR), a standardised reference document aimed at improving transparency and cost coordination in water project implementation. The SOR is expected to streamline project evaluation, prevent financial leakage, and ensure uniform pricing across departments.

The ceremony also honoured recipients of the Excellent Service Award (APC) and celebrated JBALB retirees for 2024, recognising their contributions to the state’s water supply transformation.

The Water Supply Grid Programme is seen as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s development agenda, aligning with the state’s broader vision of sustainable infrastructure and equitable access to essential services.
