KUCHING – The Borneo Culture Museum (BCM) has recorded 265,803 visitors up to November 2025, reaffirming its position as one of Sarawak’s most popular attractions.
Since opening in March 2022, the museum has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors, making it a key cultural destination in Kuching.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, highlighted the importance of creativity in museum management to sustain visitor interest. He stressed that curators must rotate artefacts regularly to ensure exhibitions remain fresh and engaging.
“This process ensures that the museum remains vibrant and engaging, offering new experiences to repeat visitors. Otherwise, those who rarely visit museums might feel there is nothing new to see.
Therefore, the creativity of the management and curators is crucial to ensuring that exhibitions are always dynamic and relevant,” he said during the launch of the Helios: (The Sun) exhibition at BCM.
Abdul Karim explained that museums worldwide typically display only about 20 per cent of their collections at any given time, with the remaining 80 per cent kept in storage. He emphasised that rotating exhibits dispels the perception that museums are static and unchanging.
The new Helios: (The Sun) exhibition is expected to attract more visitors by offering a fresh perspective that combines cultural heritage with science and technology.
Abdul Karim expressed hope that the Sarawak Museum Department would continue to introduce high-impact, international-standard exhibitions in the future.
“In this way, we can continue to promote and educate the public not only about art, history, and culture but also about science and technology, in line with current interests and needs,” he added.
The ceremony was attended by Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, Senator, Datu Sherrina Husaini, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and other distinguished guests.
The BCM’s success reflects Sarawak’s broader tourism strategy, which emphasises cultural preservation, innovation, and international-standard attractions to strengthen Kuching’s position as a regional cultural hub.
