TEBEDU – Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kujang Mawang will officially commence its first academic session on 12 January 2026, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s rural education development.
The project, originally envisioned by a former Sarawak Education Minister, has been realised through joint efforts between the government and the local community.
The new school stands as part of the state’s broader initiative to upgrade dilapidated schools, supported by a RM1 billion allocation dedicated to improving education infrastructure in rural areas.
Director of the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS), Omar Mahli, highlighted that SK Kujang Mawang was selected as a strategic project due to its remote location and its designation as a full-boarding primary school.
“SK Kujang Mawang was chosen as a strategic project given its location far from the city centre and its status as a full-boarding primary school,” he said during the opening ceremony on Wednesday.
The school is designed to serve as a Cluster School, acting as a central hub for students from several smaller institutions in the surrounding area, including SK Kujang Sain, SK Daha and SK Tesu.
This approach aims to consolidate resources and provide a more comprehensive learning environment for children from under-represented schools.
Omar emphasised that the construction of SK Kujang Mawang reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education across Sarawak.
He noted that the initiative demonstrates JPNS’s determination to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, ensuring that children in remote areas are not left behind.
The establishment of the school is expected to provide modern facilities and a conducive learning environment, supporting both academic and personal development for students.
It also represents a long-term investment in strengthening rural education, aligning with Sarawak’s vision of inclusive growth and opportunity.
Also present at the ceremony was Serian District Education Officer Bunsie Tunton, who joined officials and community members in celebrating the completion of the project.
The opening of SK Kujang Mawang is seen as a landmark achievement in Sarawak’s education landscape, offering new hope for rural families and reinforcing the state’s pledge to prioritise education as a cornerstone of development.
