Miri Harmoni Club Marks 21 Years Supporting Single-Mother Families

MIRI – The Miri Harmoni Social and Welfare Club has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting children from single-mother families through its 21st annual “Back to School” Welfare Fund Distribution Programme, held at Food Heaven Restaurant, Permyjaya, on Saturday.

The initiative, which has been running for over two decades, continues to ease the financial burden of vulnerable families while ensuring that children remain in mainstream education.

Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, officiated the event and praised the club’s long-standing commitment to community welfare.

He recalled that in the early years of the programme, many children faced severe economic challenges, lacking essentials such as uniforms, school bags, shoes, and basic learning materials. These difficulties often affected their confidence and school attendance.

“No matter how difficult the situation, we cannot impoverish education. Every child deserves the opportunity to go to school and gain knowledge because education is the key to changing the future,” he said.

Dato Sri Lee highlighted the success stories of children who benefited from the programme, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and establish professional careers as doctors, engineers, and lawyers.

He stressed that these achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of education-focused social interventions.

Beyond education, the Harmoni Club also collaborates with authorities to address security and welfare concerns faced by single-mother families, ensuring their safety and well-being.

The minister urged beneficiaries who have succeeded to give back to society, helping the next generation and contributing to reducing social challenges in the community.

He further encouraged students to strive for academic excellence and take advantage of free higher education opportunities offered by four Sarawak Government-owned universities, which provide 64 selected programmes for eligible Sarawakians.

During the ceremony, recipients received school bags, uniforms, shoes, and stationery, helping families prepare for the upcoming school session.

The event reinforced the club’s role as a pillar of support for single-mother households, ensuring that children have the resources and encouragement needed to pursue education and build brighter futures.
