Media Praised as Key Partner in Delivering Trusted Information

MIRI – The media has been recognised as a vital partner in ensuring the public receives accurate and balanced information, with Sarawak leaders emphasising its role in strengthening trust between communities and government.

At the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) Pre-Christmas Ceremony 2025, Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who is also the Senadin Assemblyman, highlighted the importance of responsible reporting in shaping public understanding.

He noted that journalists often serve as the first responders to community issues, ensuring that developments and challenges are conveyed to the wider public.

Lee expressed gratitude to NSJA members for their consistent efforts in covering matters of local development, social welfare, and healthcare.

He stressed that the profession requires dedication and resilience, as journalists frequently prioritise the needs of society over their own well-being.

The minister also urged media practitioners to adapt to emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), which is increasingly influencing the industry.

He reminded reporters to uphold fact-checking standards and journalistic ethics even as they embrace digital innovation.

“You have been an invaluable partner to the state government in highlighting on-the-ground realities, amplifying the voices of the community and showcasing progress through your stories,” he said.

The ceremony served not only as a festive gathering, but also as a platform to reinforce solidarity among media professionals. NSJA President Chai Chon Chin described the event as an opportunity to strengthen unity and collaboration within the industry.

He acknowledged the association’s ongoing commitment to supporting the welfare and professional growth of its members.

The role of the media in Sarawak has been repeatedly underscored in recent months. At the NSJA’s 50th anniversary earlier this year, Lee emphasised that the press remains crucial in safeguarding public discourse against misinformation and in promoting social cohesion.

Similarly, other state leaders have highlighted the importance of maintaining a resilient and ethical media landscape to support Malaysia’s broader democratic framework.

In Miri, the NSJA has been actively involved in initiatives beyond reporting, including community outreach and campaigns to combat misinformation. These efforts reflect the association’s broader mission to serve both the profession and the public interest.

As Sarawak continues to advance in areas of infrastructure, digitalisation, and community development, the partnership between government and media is expected to remain central.

The recognition given to journalists at the ceremony underscores their enduring role in bridging communication between authorities and citizens, while adapting to the demands of a rapidly evolving information environment.
