MERADONG – The Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) has successfully delivered another infrastructure upgrade with the completion of the rewiring project at Regina Longhouse, Sungai Selidap.
The RM99,000 initiative, covering 22 longhouse doors, was designed to enhance safety and comfort for residents by installing a modern electrical wiring system that complies with current technical standards.
The project was carried out over three months, beginning on 20 August 2025 and concluding on 19 November 2025, meeting its scheduled timeline.
A brief handover ceremony was held at the longhouse on Tuesday, officiated by Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, State Assemblyman for Meradong.
In his remarks, Ding highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring approved development projects are implemented effectively and provide tangible benefits to rural communities.
He expressed confidence that the upgraded facilities would improve the quality of life for residents, noting that safer and more organised wiring systems reduce risks and support long-term sustainability.
“I hope that the upgraded facilities can be fully utilised by the residents of the Regina Longhouse, thus continuously improving their safety and quality of life,” he said.
The assemblyman also extended his gratitude to the implementing agency, contractors, and local residents for their cooperation throughout the project. Their collective effort ensured the smooth completion of the rewiring works.
The RTP, introduced to accelerate rural development across Sarawak, has been instrumental in addressing infrastructure gaps in longhouse communities.
Projects such as this not only improve living conditions but also reflect the government’s broader strategy to uplift rural areas and provide equitable access to modern amenities.
Electrical safety has been a growing concern in longhouses, many of which were built decades ago with outdated wiring systems.
By upgrading to modern standards, the Regina Longhouse project sets an example for similar initiatives across the state.
It demonstrates how targeted investments can directly improve community welfare while aligning with Sarawak’s long-term development goals.
The completion of this project adds to a series of RTP successes in Meradong, reinforcing the importance of continuous collaboration between government agencies, contractors, and local communities.
With more projects expected under Budget 2026 allocations, rural residents can anticipate further improvements in infrastructure and services.
For the Regina Longhouse community, the rewiring project marks a significant step towards safer living conditions and a stronger foundation for future development.
