Mukah Hockey Youth Success Signals Bright Future for Local Sport

MUKAH – Hockey in Mukah Division is experiencing a surge in growth, with young athletes delivering strong performances at both state and national levels.

The progress reflects the impact of structured grassroots initiatives and the combined support of schools, parents, and government agencies.

The momentum comes as Sarawak continues to invest in sports infrastructure, including the planned expansion of Mukah Stadium, which will feature facilities such as a synthetic hockey pitch and multipurpose courts.

The project, approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, is expected to elevate Mukah’s sporting profile and align it with other divisions such as Bintulu and Sibu.

At the Biennial Appreciation Ceremony of the Mukah Division Hockey Association for the 2024–2025 session, held at Kingwood Hotel, District Education Officer Awang Yusri Awang Adeni highlighted the importance of consistent participation in tournaments.

He noted that exposure to competitions organised by external associations has raised the standard of hockey in Mukah, placing it alongside more established sports in the division.

“The ability of Mukah hockey teams to compete up to state and national stages demonstrates the sport’s strong potential, provided development efforts are carried out in a structured and continuous manner,” he said.

The year 2025 has already marked significant achievements for Mukah hockey. The under-15 boys’ team clinched the championship title in the Sarawak State Indoor Hockey League, while the under-19 girls’ team secured second place in the same competition. These victories underscore the growing competitiveness of Mukah’s youth teams.

Further recognition came when several players were selected to represent Sarawak at the National NHDP League 2025, hosted at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim.

Their inclusion highlights the expanding talent pool within the division and the opportunities available for young athletes to showcase their skills on larger platforms.

Mukah Division Hockey Association Chairman Masri Usop expressed gratitude to parents, teachers, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) for their unwavering support.

He emphasised that collective commitment remains vital in nurturing young athletes and sustaining long-term sports development.

He added that the recent successes should inspire more youths in Mukah to take up hockey, encouraging them to pursue excellence both on and off the field.

The ceremony was attended by several key figures, including Mukah Division Youth and Sports Ministry Assistant Officer Mohd Arbi Rosli, Assistant District Education Officer (Student Development Sector) Kueh Peng Choon, Deputy President of the Mukah Division Hockey Association Jutim Joem, and Honorary Secretary Khairul Naim Samad.

With infrastructure upgrades underway and youth teams achieving notable results, Mukah’s hockey scene is poised for further growth.

The combination of grassroots development, institutional support, and rising talent suggests a promising future for the sport in the division.
