KUCHING, 20 December 2025 – The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak Branch held its Annual Dinner 2025 under the theme “Engineering Tomorrow, Empowering Sarawak”, celebrating the pivotal role of engineers and technical professionals in driving the state’s transformation.
Guest of Honour, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, underscored the importance of professional expertise in realising Sarawak’s ambitious development agenda.
With infrastructure projects worth USD 9 billion funded by the Sarawak Government and an additional USD 6 billion from the Federal Government scheduled for 2026, the Premier stressed that engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, and other technical specialists are essential in ensuring successful implementation.
The event also recognised outstanding achievements of anak Sarawak, with awards presented to secondary school students and engineering undergraduates from universities across Malaysia.
These young talents were celebrated as future contributors to the state’s engineering sector and nation-building efforts.
In his remarks, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian extended congratulations to the award recipients and expressed gratitude to the engineering fraternity for their dedication.
He highlighted the symbolic pledge taken during the dinner – “Engineer in Nation Building” – as a commitment to advancing Sarawak’s progress.
Dr Sim noted that Sarawak’s development journey requires catching up with West Malaysia, and emphasised that the state’s professionals are stepping forward to meet this challenge.
He praised the engineers for their readiness to shoulder responsibility in shaping Sarawak’s future.
The dinner brought together industry leaders, government officials, and engineering professionals, reinforcing the collaborative spirit needed to achieve the state’s vision of sustainable growth and modernisation.
