SABAH – A native of Telupid, Gerald Wong, has brought pride to Sabah after being named the recipient of The 7th ASEAN Rural Development and Poverty Eradication Leadership Award in Bangkok, Thailand.
The award recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to rural development and poverty alleviation across the ASEAN region.
Wong’s achievement has been celebrated as a milestone for Sabah, highlighting the impact of grassroots initiatives that have grown to resonate at the regional level.
Since beginning his journey in 2018, Wong has overcome challenges with determination and vision. Through his enterprise, Farm Tokou, he has introduced modern agricultural practices such as hydroponics and aquaponics, enabling rural communities to generate sustainable income.
His efforts have not only advanced agricultural innovation but also empowered local communities to embrace self-reliance and resilience.
Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Haji Noor, expressed pride in Wong’s success, describing him as a source of inspiration for the people of Sabah.
He emphasised that Wong’s achievements demonstrate the importance of perseverance and innovation in bringing meaningful change to society.
“Gerald Wong is the pride of Sabah and a source of inspiration to us all. May his success continue to inspire not only the youth of Sabah but all of us to dare to start, strive without giving up and bring meaningful change to our beloved community and state,” Hajiji said.
The recognition of Wong’s work underscores the growing importance of sustainable agriculture in addressing poverty and rural development challenges.
His initiatives reflect broader ASEAN efforts to promote inclusive growth and community empowerment.
Wong’s journey from grassroots entrepreneurship to regional recognition serves as a reminder that determination, innovation, and community spirit can drive transformation.
His success story is expected to inspire more young people in Sabah and beyond to pursue ventures that contribute to both personal achievement and collective progress.
