KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised the courage of Malaysian humanitarian volunteers who were detained following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli forces on 2 October.
The flotilla, which sought to deliver aid to Gaza, was attacked, and its crew arrested, including 23 Malaysians.
The incident prompted swift action from Malaysia, with the government mobilising diplomatic channels to secure their release.
According to Anwar, every effort was made to ensure the safety of the detained volunteers, with negotiations conducted at the highest level involving Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and the United States.
These talks ultimately led to the safe return of all Malaysians on 7 October, a development welcomed by citizens who had closely followed the situation.
The Prime Minister described the volunteers as “humanitarian heroes”, commending their determination to cross the seas in support of Palestinians despite facing harsh treatment in custody.
He said their steadfastness reflected the strength of Malaysian solidarity and the nation’s commitment to humanitarian causes.
Malaysia’s open support for the flotilla mission stood out at a time when many global powers remained silent or discouraged criticism of Israel’s actions.
Anwar stressed that the episode demonstrated Malaysia’s readiness to act decisively in defence of humanitarian principles.
The Prime Minister also reiterated Malaysia’s long-standing position on Palestine, emphasising that the country will continue to stand firm with Gaza until justice is achieved and an independent Palestinian state is realised.
Observers note that Malaysia has consistently voiced support for Palestinian rights at international forums, including the United Nations, and has often taken a proactive role in humanitarian missions.
The release of the detained volunteers is seen as a diplomatic success, highlighting Malaysia’s ability to leverage regional and international partnerships to protect its citizens abroad.
The incident has further underscored the risks faced by humanitarian activists in conflict zones, but also the resilience of those committed to delivering aid.
For Malaysia, the episode reinforces its image as a nation willing to champion humanitarian causes despite geopolitical challenges.
Anwar concluded by expressing hope that the courage shown by the volunteers will inspire Malaysians to continue supporting humanitarian missions and standing in solidarity with oppressed communities worldwide.
