MUKAH — Police in Mukah have arrested a foreign man after finding suspected drugs during an operation along the Pan Borneo Road linking Sibu and Bintulu, reinforcing ongoing efforts to curb drug abuse in Sarawak.
The arrest was made on December 22 at about 3.00 pm by officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Mukah District Police Headquarters. The operation took place in the Selangau area following information and surveillance on suspected drug-related activities along the busy highway.
Mukah District Police Chief DSP Muhamad Rizal bin Alias said the suspect, a 31-year-old foreign national working as a construction labourer, was stopped and inspected by the police team. During the inspection, officers found several clear straw tubes containing crystal-like substances in the suspect’s pocket. The substances are believed to be methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu.
Initial assessment estimated the weight of the seized drugs at 0.41 gram, with an estimated street value of RM110. Following the discovery, the suspect was immediately arrested and brought, together with the seized items, to the Mukah District Police Headquarters for further investigation.
A urine screening test conducted on the suspect later confirmed positive results for both amphetamine and methamphetamine. Police said this strengthened the case against the suspect, who is believed to have been involved in drug abuse activities.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of dangerous drugs, as well as Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug consumption. To facilitate further investigations, the suspect has been remanded for four days until December 27, 2025.
DSP Muhamad Rizal stressed that the Mukah police remain firm in their commitment to combat drug abuse and drug-related crimes in the district. He noted that drug activities not only threaten public safety but also damage families and communities, particularly when involving individuals working in key labour sectors.
