MIRI – The Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign was officially celebrated at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Miri, reinforcing the city’s position as one of Sarawak’s leading tourism destinations.
The vibrant ceremony, held on Wednesday, was officiated by Miri City Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, who highlighted the importance of the initiative in welcoming both domestic and international travellers.
The event forms part of a nationwide programme, with similar celebrations taking place at major entry points and transport hubs across Malaysia.
In Miri, the campaign is designed to create a strong first impression for visitors, showcasing the city’s hospitality, cultural richness, and diverse tourism offerings.
Adam Yii emphasised that the ICQS celebration strengthens Miri’s role as a strategic gateway to northern Sarawak.
“This initiative supports the ongoing efforts to highlight Miri as a strategic tourism gateway to northern Sarawak, thus strengthening the city’s tourism identity in VM2026,” he said.
He added that early exposure to cultural elements and the warmth of local communities is central to Miri’s appeal, helping to distinguish the city as a unique destination.
The campaign also aims to enhance the attractiveness of Miri for travellers entering Sarawak via land routes.
The ICQS celebration is part of a broader calendar of more than 300 major events under VM2026, which will include tourism, cultural, and community programmes nationwide throughout the year.
These initiatives are expected to increase tourist arrivals, stimulate the local economy, and contribute to sustainable growth in the tourism sector at both state and national levels.
Miri, known for its coastal charm, national parks, and cultural diversity, has long been recognised as a tourism hub in northern Sarawak.
The VM2026 campaign provides an opportunity to further strengthen its identity and visibility on the international stage.
Officials noted that the initiative aligns with Malaysia’s wider tourism strategy, which seeks to attract millions of visitors during the VM2026 campaign period.
For Miri, the celebration at ICQS represents not only a symbolic welcome but also a practical step in positioning the city as a premier destination for travellers seeking authentic Sarawakian experiences.
With the campaign now underway, Miri is set to benefit from increased exposure, greater visitor numbers, and stronger recognition as a key player in Sarawak’s tourism landscape.
