KUALA KRAI – A wedding celebration in Lata Rek, Kelantan, turned tragic when a suspension bridge collapsed, sending more than 50 guests into the Chatel Damai River yesterday afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 2pm, when guests from the groom’s side, who were leaving the venue, met guests from the bride’s side arriving at the same time. The large number of people converging on the bridge caused it to give way suddenly.
According to Mukim Lata Rek village head Mohd Zaki Saari, a man sustained a fractured leg after falling onto river rocks, while a child suffered a head injury requiring several stitches. Three other victims experienced minor injuries and breathing difficulties. No fatalities were reported.
The suspension bridge, which serves as a vital access route for residents of five nearby houses, has been repaired several times in the past. It is primarily used by pedestrians and motorcycles, with an alternative route available but considered inconvenient due to distance and limited accessibility.
Mohd Zaki explained that inspections revealed the bridge’s anchoring cables embedded in concrete had deteriorated and required replacement. He added that Manek Urai assemblyman Mohd Fauzi Abdullah visited the site shortly after the incident and assured that repair works would be carried out urgently.
Residents noted that the bridge is not only a ceremonial route but also a lifeline for daily activities. Its collapse during a crowded moment highlighted the risks of structural fatigue and the importance of regular monitoring of public facilities.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with joyous celebrations turning into panic as guests screamed while falling into the river. The incident left many traumatised, particularly children, and has become a sombre reminder of the need for stronger safety measures in community infrastructure.
Authorities have pledged immediate action to restore the bridge and ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The tragedy has left a lasting impression on the local community, overshadowing what was meant to be a joyful union.
