PM Orders Immediate Replacement Of Collapsed Suspension Bridge In Kuala Krai

KUALA LUMPUR – The Prime Minister’s Office has announced urgent measures to replace the collapsed suspension bridge in Lata Rek, Kuala Krai, following an incident yesterday that injured several people and disrupted daily access for residents in nearby villages.

The Prime Minister expressed deep sympathy for the more than 50 victims affected, including the newlyweds and their families, whose wedding celebration was overshadowed by the tragedy. He emphasised that the government views the matter seriously and will ensure immediate action is taken.

The collapse of the bridge, which serves as a vital link for residents of Kampung Pasir Jering, Dusun Ban, Dusun Bunut and Kampung Batu Pagar, has raised concerns about infrastructure safety in rural areas. The bridge had long been used by pedestrians and motorcycles, providing essential connectivity for local communities.

In response, the Prime Minister directed that allocations be made without delay to replace the damaged structure. The Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department will oversee the replacement works in collaboration with relevant agencies.

Officials confirmed that the repair and replacement process will be carried out swiftly to restore safe access for residents and prevent similar incidents in the future. The move underscores the government’s commitment to prioritising public safety and ensuring reliable infrastructure for communities across Kelantan.

The Prime Minister’s directive comes after local leaders, including Manek Urai assemblyman Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, visited the site and highlighted the urgent need for repairs. Inspections revealed that the bridge’s anchoring cables embedded in concrete had deteriorated, contributing to the collapse.

Residents have welcomed the government’s intervention, noting that the bridge is not only crucial for daily activities but also for emergency access during adverse weather. The replacement project is expected to bring relief to affected families and restore confidence in the safety of local infrastructure.
