Helium Gas Cylinder Explosion Damages Stalls, Cars in Kajang

KUALA LUMPUR — A sudden explosion involving a helium gas cylinder caused damage to two food stalls and three vehicles at Medan Selera Sungai Ramal in Kajang on Friday afternoon, creating panic among traders and visitors in the busy area.

The incident occurred at about 1pm, a time when the food court area was active with lunchtime crowds. Kajang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, confirmed that police received a report shortly after the explosion took place. Despite the loud blast and damage caused, no casualties or injuries were reported.

According to Naazron, initial investigations conducted at the scene found that the incident did not involve any criminal elements. Police believe the explosion was accidental in nature, although the exact cause has yet to be determined. The helium gas cylinder involved is understood to have exploded suddenly, resulting in damage to nearby property.

Two stalls located close to the source of the explosion suffered structural damage, while three vehicles parked in the area were also affected. Witnesses at the scene described hearing a strong bang followed by confusion, as people rushed to move away from the area for safety. Traders and members of the public were advised to remain calm as authorities secured the location.

Police and relevant agencies carried out checks to ensure there was no further danger to the public. The area was later declared safe after preliminary assessments were completed. At this stage, the value of losses incurred from the incident is still under investigation.

Naazron said police will continue to investigate the cause of the explosion, including how the helium gas cylinder was stored and handled. He added that public cooperation is important to help authorities complete the investigation thoroughly and accurately.

Members of the public who have information related to the incident are urged to come forward. They may contact the Kajang Police Station Chief, Inspector Shisheewady Ruzani, at 016-8565670 to assist with ongoing inquiries.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper handling and safety measures when dealing with pressurised gas cylinders, especially in public and commercial areas. Authorities are expected to review safety practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
