Sarawak’s Inclusive Policies Enhance Living Standards and Retirement Appeal

KUCHING – Sarawak has been recognised as one of the top five destinations for retirement in Malaysia, a distinction attributed to its economic resilience and inclusive social policies.

Dato Ir. Lo Khere Chiang, Assemblyman for Batu Kitang, highlighted that Sarawak consistently records among the highest revenue collections in the country.

This financial strength, he explained, enables the state to sustain initiatives designed to improve the quality of life for its people.

Among the state’s advantages are comparatively low electricity and water tariffs, affordable assessment rates, and the landmark introduction of free tertiary education for Sarawakian students. These measures, he noted, ease financial burdens while expanding opportunities for families.

“In the past, parents were concerned about the cost and access to higher education for their children. However, under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, the state government has introduced free tertiary education to ensure more inclusive access to higher learning,” said Dato Lo.

He made the remarks after officiating the launch of the Housekeeping Training Programme organised by the Special Needs Society Kuching (SNSK) on Sunday.

The initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to skills development and community empowerment.

Dato Lo emphasised that education remains central to nation-building and the development of human capital.

He stressed that investing in education is vital for preparing Sarawakians to meet future challenges while ensuring equitable access to opportunities.

At the same time, he commended the role of non-governmental organisations, particularly the Special Needs Society Kuching, for their dedication to supporting individuals with special needs.

He said such organisations play a crucial role in strengthening social cohesion and safeguarding community welfare.

Sarawak’s development agenda, he added, is not confined to economic growth alone. The state places strong emphasis on compassion, inclusivity, and overall social well-being, ensuring that progress benefits all segments of society.

Observers note that Sarawak’s policies align with broader global trends where retirement destinations are increasingly evaluated not only on affordability but also on healthcare, education, and social support systems.

With its combination of economic stability and people-focused initiatives, Sarawak continues to stand out as a model for balanced development.
