SELANGAU – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Selangau District has confirmed that floodwaters remain around Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nanga Selangau, though water levels are showing signs of decline.
Monitoring conducted on Monday morning, 12 January 2026, at 8.55 am revealed that the school’s low-lying areas are still submerged under approximately two to four feet of water.
Several building structures within the compound have been affected, raising concerns about potential damage to facilities.
Despite the ongoing flooding, officials noted that the situation is gradually improving, with water levels trending downward.
The Civil Defence Force assured that continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure the safety of students, staff and nearby residents.
SK Nanga Selangau is among several schools in Sarawak impacted by seasonal monsoon floods this month.
The State Education Department previously reported that 26 schools across districts such as Selangau, Daro and Tatau/Sebauh were unable to open at the start of the new term due to inundation.
Nineteen schools in Tatau/Sebauh were the worst affected, while others, including SK Bukit Arip, were repurposed as evacuation centres.
Flooding in Selangau has also disrupted road access to longhouse communities along the Batang and Arip rivers.
While some areas have seen waters recede, others remain cut off, prompting disaster management teams to maintain close surveillance.
Local authorities emphasised that preparedness remains crucial, even as conditions improve. The Civil Defence Force has urged residents to remain vigilant and to contact its 24-hour emergency hotline at 084-891285 should assistance be required.
The Civil Defence Force reaffirmed its guiding principle of “Ready, Fast, With Integrity” as it continues to safeguard communities and provide timely updates.
With flood risks persisting across Sarawak, disaster management teams remain on standby to respond swiftly to any escalation.
